Create for You, Design for Them

No one wants to consume something that isn’t for them.

The amount of content that exists in the world right now exists solely for the consumer. As a creator, you have this itch. An itch to make something that didn’t exist before. Something that is new. Something that has a portion of yourself etched into it.

Thousands of YouTube channels are created every day.

Kids nowadays ALL want to become a YouTuber. Not a firefighter. Not the President.

A YouTuber.

In the past, the barrier for entry was high for any profession. Whether it was age, education, training, PROOF, etc. You could not simply just BECOME an astronaut.

But a YouTuber? A “content creator”? This takes no training. With an iPhone you could start a YouTube channel, podcast, blog, or ANYTHING really. The barrier for entry is SOOOO low that the only thing between where they are, and where they want to be, is just a TON of smart work.

I say this because as I was thinking a lot today about a quote I hear that floats around the creator space:

“The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time to start is now.”

And this is totally true. As the “Creator Economy” matures, it will become more and more difficult to succeed and the more barrier for entry there will become.

We are living in a digital land grab for attention. It’s the wild west and it’s so easy to sit in the saloon and be entertained by others, while others venture off to stake a claim in an unknown territory.

I say this because I think something has clicked for me recently. For the longest time I have not quite grasped what it was that I wanted to, or could, create. I’ve been telling myself that I want to “create for myself.”

I want to make the type of videos I LIKE or that I WANT to make, but I never seem to succeed as well as I would hope. I often think to myself,

“As long as I’m consistent, I can make what I want and people will eventually watch.”

Of course this is an ode to “If you build it, they will come.”

True.

However, I think I have figured out how to get more people to show up, and stay, faster.

There’s truly only ONE type of content that can spread like wildfire.

ONE type of post that will go “viral”

ONE type of video that will “Blow UP”

Do you know what it is? I’ll give you a few seconds to think…

You want the answer? Here it is:

Shareable Content.

That’s right. The only way you can market yourself into the spotlight is if you have the world do it for you. Stop trying to come up with a proper “marketing strategy.” Stop reading another ebook on “how to get 10K Followers.”

You just need to make SHAREABLE content. Things that your target audience HAS to share with all their friends because it’s either cute, funny, educational, or ALL THREE.

In another post, I will be writing about how to create shareable content. So that is in the pipeline.

But I want this to be a bit of an inspiration for you. The digital gold rush is happening right now. Seize your opportunity while you still have it. Do so by creating shareable content that markets itself. Have fun doing it.
